You Have Many Games to Choose From

Are you tired of playing the same old games you’ve had for years – Monopoly, Clue, Risk?

Are you ready for something exciting and new? If so, you’ve come to the right place.

Here you’ll find dozens of reviews of great board games that have been designed by some of the most creative gaming minds in Europe, the US, and elsewhere.

I know it can be hard to get the true flavor of a game just from reading about it and looking at a few pictures. But I hope you’ll be inspired just enough to click a link and give a new game a try.

How Do I Know Which Game to Get?

If you’re not sure what kind of game you want, I suggest trying a couple of them at once. One of the neatest things about board games is that there is quite often someone who will either buy it from you or trade it for a game they no longer want. So there’s very little risk of getting permanently stuck with a game you don’t like.

Deals like these are made virtually every week via BoardGameGeek.com (BGG). If you’re not a user at BGG (registration is free), I strongly suggest you sign up today. The multitude of resources there are a great benefit to game players like you and me.

It’s difficult to categorize board games to make the ones you’ll like easy to find. Games have so many facets that no single system works for everyone.

I also suggest that you try clicking the tags found just before the text of an article or review. Many of these tags are references to the mechanics (i.e. mechanisms of play) used in a game. Clicking such a tag will bring up all the reviews and articles with similar mechanics.

If, after all this exploration, you still can’t decide on a game, send me a note, and I’ll see if I can come up with a personalized suggestion or two for you to start with.

If you like any of these fun board games, go to Amazon.com and add them to your personal wish list.

Games to Get You Started

The Settlers of Catan – This is the game that many claim started all the fuss (in a good way) about board games back in 1995. You may have already played it. If not, give it a try. It’s a great game for getting your feet wet, so to speak, in the wonderful world of modern board games.

SettlersOfCatan

Ticket To Ride – We have loved this game (and its sequels) for years at our house. In fact, we still play it fairly often, even though we have dozens of others to choose from. It’s simple yet challenging enough to keep you coming back time after time.

Alhambra – Here’s a tile laying game for you to try. Like many tile games, there is no real board (like in Clue). You make the board as you go by laying tiles next to each other. Tile laying games are, in general, my favorite type of board game.

Alhambra

If Wishes Were Fishes – This is a combination card and board game unlike anything you’ve probably seen before. Use the cards to sell your fish for premium prices before the markets close. Sell the most, quickly, and you’ll win.

If Wishes Were Fishes

Blokus – Not all games have themes like railroads, islands, or fish. Some like Blokus are more abstract, consisting of colored pieces with no pictures or other thematic references. I’m pretty good at this one (unlike many of the games I love to play).
