Making a Black Friday Prediction

Yesterday I privately made this prediction, so I thought I’d make it public today. If I’m right, I’m right. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong. I may not be the first to have said this either. It really doesn’t matter, but I think it’s something worth thinking about.

Here’s the prediction:

Within 5 years, virtually all retail businesses will be open all day on Thanksgiving.

Thus, Black Friday will cease to have any significance. I’m not sure if Cyber Monday would also be affected, but it seems likely.

Already this year there were many businesses that preempted Black Friday in one way or another. I can only see this trend continuing and expanding. I’ve heard that retailers don’t especially like the big hit on Black Friday and would rather have sales spread out over several days at least.

If this comes to pass, will it increase (Christmas) sales, decrease sales, or leave sales unchanged? Discuss amongst yourselves.

Will it benefit brick and mortar stores more than online stores? Discuss some more.
